Moving Musts

Buying a new home can be an exciting process. Here are some things to consider after the transaction, as you prepare to make the move.

Send change of address to:

  • Work Office / HR Department
  • Post Office (you can do this online here)
  • Credit Cards and Bank Accounts
  • Subscriptions
  • Friends and Relatives
  • Insurance (Life, Health, Fire, Auto)
  • Automobile (Transfer car title, registration, driver’s license)
  • Utility Companies (gas, electric, water, phone, cable, internet)

Update or transfer records and memberships:

  • School records: ask for copies or transfer records
  • Health records: medical, dental, prescriptions
  • Memberships: church, clubs, civic organizations
  • Pets: vet (ask about regulations, licenses, vaccinations and tags for new home)

Prior to moving day, don’t forget to:

  • Select a moving company and make arrangements
  • Pack and clearly label boxes (use an “essentials” label for items you’ll need to unpack right away)
  • Empty freezers, plan use of foods
  • Defrost freezer/refrigerator (use baking soda to dispel odors)
  • Have appliances serviced for moving
  • Remember arrangements for TV and cable services
  • Clean rugs and carpet before moving (see local cleaning services here)
  • Have rugs/furniture wrapped for moving
  • Plan special care needs for children, pets and house plants

On moving day, don’t forget to:

  • Carry money, jewelry and important documents yourself
  • Plan for transporting pets
  • Double check old closets, drawers and shelves for belongings
  • Leave old keys needed by new owner with your Realtor

Customize a checklist to fit your needs so you can be sure to have a less stressful moving experience!
